Hanging out by the river for a couple of nights in my custom Tier Gear hammock setup. Pictured here is a lightweight Goshawk hammock, synthetic Quoll underquilt along with a Dutchware whoopie hook suspension kit and some burly tree straps. I’ve been using this system for over a year now, and have easily spent at least 60 nights cosied up in it. I generally roll with the hammock where ever I’m sure there’ll be spots to hang. This typically equates to all the places I take bushcraft trips, and most of the places I hike, other than coastal stretches that is.
I’ve found sleeping in a hammock affords me less fuss when setting up camp if I’m in an undulating and forested area. It serves to open up my options and subsequently my views, such as the scene in this photograph. If I didn’t have my hammock it would have been unreasonable to spend two nights at this particular location. There were no ground dwelling options anywhere in eye shot of the river as much of the area had been flooded due to some prior heavy rains. I’d have had to either cross the river, or bushwhack up a steep hill for some 100 metres before happening upon a level site. Of course, finding level enough ground is very doable most anywhere, but finding two trees is about as easy as it gets in a place like this.
This hammock system has proven itself time and time again and I have no doubts it will continue to do so for many moons to come.
